Description

What it is: A two-ingredient Italian aperitivo of Campari and sweet vermouth that sits directly in the family tree of the Americano and Negroni.

The story: The Milano Torino, usually shortened to Mi-To, takes its name from the two cities associated with its ingredients: Campari from Milan and vermouth from Turin. It predates the Americano and Negroni and shows how much complexity can come from a simple bitter-and-vermouth pairing.

Why it works: Campari brings orange peel, roots and assertive bitterness; sweet vermouth adds wine, spice and sweetness. Proper chilling and dilution are crucial because there is nowhere for poor balance to hide.

Ingredients

  • 45 ml Campari
  • 45 ml Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 orange slice

Instructions

  1. Chill a lowball glass and prepare a fresh orange slice or wedge.
  2. Add Campari and sweet vermouth to a mixing vessel with plenty of ice.
  3. Stir for about 20 seconds until thoroughly chilled and lightly diluted.
  4. Strain over a large fresh cube in the lowball glass.
  5. Garnish with orange and serve as an aperitivo.
